MANY Islamic clerics may have fled Ilorin, the Kwara state capital over the fear of being arrested by the state Police command following the alleged ritual killing of a final-year student of Kwara State College of Education, Yetunde Lawal by an Islamic cleric said to be in his late 20s.
Sources closed to TheGlobalReportage in Ilorin said, the fleeing clerics were allegedly afraid of being linked with the dastardly act.
“We know that the arraignment of the prime suspect and some four others was just a dressed rehearsal of more investigations that could implicate some of these clerics hence the reason for their running away from the town.
“They are afraid of being named by the prime suspect in the ritual killing ordeal. They believe that, anyone whose mobile number is in the call logs of any of the suspects is not safe. He could be summoned or arrested by the Police,” said a source.
Lawal was murdered in Ilorin for alleged ritual purposes. Her body was found dismembered and hidden in a bowl, along with the tools used to dismember her.
The suspect, identified as the son of a prominent Muslim cleric, was arrested and confessed to killing Lawal for ritual purposes. He met Lawal on Facebook and invited her to his house, where he killed her.
Four other suspects, including an Islamic scholar, a business person, a phone repairer, and a farmer, were also arraigned in court for allegedly killing Lawal. They were charged with criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, armed robbery, and possession of human parts.
This incident has sparked outrage and condemnation, with many calling for justice for Lawal and her family.
